Jan 16, 2011 – Portland, Oregon, U.S. – Guests at the new Panara Cares Cafe dine in the anonymity of not knowing who has paid what amount, if anything for their meal. The concept narrows the gap between those who have-and those without. Panera Cares Cafe, a unique nonprofit community restaurant opens in the Hollywood District. The cafe encourages ‘shared responsibility’ with the goal being that everyone who needs a meal gets one. Cafe guests order then are presented with, not a totaled bill, but a ‘suggested price’. Many guests pay that figure, some pay more to subsidise the effort and some pay a reduced total or nothing at all. ‘It’s all according to need’ says Panera Bread founder R.
