Elizabeth Holmes is Making Plenty of Headlines Lately
Since HBO debuted its documentary about Elizabeth Holmes, the founder of now-defunct Theranos, headlines have been popping up left and right about the 35-year old.
Articles range from her low deep voice being fake, to her not blinking, etc. Holmes, who dropped out of Stanford to focus on her blood-testing start up, has become a fascinating topic due to the extent of how much of a fraud her company was.
Many are wondering if Holmes will go to prison for leading investors on. She and Theranos’s former chief operating officer Ramesh “Sunny” Balwani have a pending criminal fraud case against them in a federal court in San Jose.
The two are facing prison terms for defrauding investors, patients, and doctors with a technology that supposedly eliminated the need for large needles for a wide array of blood tests.
“This is probably the highest profile fraud case in the Northern District of California,” said Peter J. Henning, a professor and author of the White Collar Watch column in The New York Times.
“There is some pressure on prosecutors to get a conviction.”
There may even be a movie coming out starring Jennifer Lawrence as Holmes.
Both Holmes and Balwani were indicted in June 2018 and pleaded not guilty. They were released on $500,000 bail.
Their case is in “discovery” and if prosecutors bring the case to trial, it will likely occur sometime in 2020.
