Amazon is Working with Mexico’s Central Bank to Create This
Global giant Amazon is now working with Mexico’s central bank on a mobile payments system called CoDi.
According to the bank’s head of payments, testing for the system is expected to start this month and will allow customers to pay for things using their smart phones to scan a QR code.
The government backed mobile payment system is the first time that Amazon will offer a scanning technology like this in Mexico.
The system is being built by central bank Banco de México, known as Banxico.
Jaime Cortina, Banxico’s director of operations and payments, told Reuters that Amazon and rival MercadoLibre both went to the bank about helping with the system.
“They have also said that they could implement it relatively quickly,” Cortina said.
Amazon did not comment.
It was this past November that Amazon said its voice-activated digital assistant Alexa and its smart speaker Echo were available in Mexico.
