Amazon to Close All Pop-up Stores in the U.S.
According to a Wall Street Journal report, which cited employees at some of Amazon’s pop-up stores, the e-commerce giant will be closing all of its pop-up stores.
This means 87 pop-up stores are expected to close in the U.S. by the end of April said WSJ.
Amazon plans to focus more on opening Amazon Books retail stores instead said a company spokesperson this week.
“After much review, we came to the decision to discontinue our pop-up kiosk program, and are instead expanding Amazon Books and Amazon 4-star, where we provide a more comprehensive customer experience and broader selection,” an Amazon spokesperson told CBS MoneyWatch via email.
Amazon wants to expand on its 4-star store, where there are toys, games, home and kitchen goods, electronics and Amazon devices.
“We look forward to opening additional locations of both stores this year,” Amazon said in a statement.
The company currently has just a few 4-star stores currently open, in New York; Berkeley, California; and Lone Tree, Colorado. There are 20 Amazon Books stores across the country, including Los Angeles, Boston and Washington.
