Alex Stamos, the chief information security officer of Facebook, is leaving the company according to reports.

The senior executive is leaving as Facebook is in the midst of backlash for being involved in spreading disinformation during the 2016 Presidential election.

According to both old and new employees, Stamos is leaving the company due to an internal disagreement over how Facebook should handle its role in spreading disinformation. He is expected to leave by August.

Stamos has advocated that the company have more disclosure around Russian interference on Facebook’s platform as well as restructuring to address the issues. The current and old employees said that the executive was met with resistance and that in December his daily roles and responsibilities were already assigned to others.

Stamos had wanted to leave even earlier but is staying on until August to oversee the transition and responsiblities. The old and new employees also said that his departure being in August was also due to executives thinking his departure would look bad.

Mr. Stamos released a statement on Monday that read, “These are really challenging issues, and I’ve had some disagreements with all of my colleagues, including other executives.”
