4 Tips On How To Travel From The Man Who Made $54M From Snapchat

Traveling can be very difficult when you consider all the factors, and even more difficult with children.

Jessica and Garret Gee have been travelers since August of 2015 with their two young kids Dorothy and Manilla.

Garrett Gee is the man who co-founded Scan Inc, and sold the app to Snapchat for $54 million back in 2014.

After selling their worldly possessions for around $45,000, the couple decided to travel with their children and invest their earnings.

They have a blog called the Bucket List Family as well as Instagram and YouTube accounts that share their experiences.
They have four tips to share with others for traveling.

1. Kids don’t need that much stuff. For most things, the couple buys or rents it once they get to their destination. They also have a family rule. The kids pack and carry their own backpacks with toys. “If the backpack is too heavy and they don’t want to carry it, they have too many toys,” Garrett said.

2. You don’t need a fancy cellphone plan. No International cellphone plans for this family. The Gees use their iPhones when they have access to Wi-Fi. “When we were out of the house, we didn’t ever use our phones because they didn’t work,” said Jessica. “So we would spend the majority of the day disconnected from phones and enjoying our family adventures, conversations, and you know, old-fashioned good stuff.”

3. Other countries have affordable medical care. While the couple has medical travel insurance for their family, they have realized the cost of medical care in other countries is not that bad. According to Garrett, even in a more remote area of Nepal, his kids were in good hands, and the cost of the ER visit wasn’t hard on their wallets.

4. Kids are remarkably adaptable.”One of my favorite things as a parent is to see this effect that traveling has had on our kids,” he said. “I think kids are just going to grow accustomed to their surroundings. If you let them be high maintenance, they’ll be high maintenance.”

“We have a family rule that if there’s something new, you always have to try it,” Garrett said. “You don’t have to finish it but you have to try at least one bite. Almost always they’ll try one bite and like it.”
