This Year’s Oscars Had The Biggest Mistake In Oscar History

The 2017 Oscar ceremony is going down as the show that had the biggest mistake in all of Oscar history.

When it was time to give the top award, it was mistakenly given to La La Land when it should have been given to Moonlight. Fortunately it’s not like anyone left the building before the mistake was noticed and corrected, but the gaffe still left a lot of people wondering how it could even happen.

You had La La Land producer Fred Berger with his fellow producers Jordan Horowitz and Marc Platt already on stage, as the film was awarded best picture. Then a crew member next to the timer clock is waving his arms and shaking his head no while someone nearby yells “Moonlight won!”

How awkward this must have been for the producers watching this unfold!

Stage manager Gary Natoli then ran onstage with a red envelope to show it to Berger and Horowitz as Platt was already giving his acceptance speech. Poor Platt didn’t even know what was going on and waited for Berger to give his speech.

Berger, despite knowing the error, still thanked his wife and family and then ended the speech with “We lost, by the way.”

So how could such a mistake even happen? Actor Warren Beatty, who announced the winner, had been handed the wrong envelope and was given the extra copy of Emma Stone’s best actress card. Who did This? Brian Cullinan, chairman of the U.S. board of PricewaterhouseCoopers. PwC later took blame for the error as it is the accounting firm that tabulates and hands out the results.
