This is What Jeff Bezos Told a Racist Amazon Customer

Amazon’s CEO Jeff Bezos may be the richest man on the planet, but that doesn’t mean he’ll let money get in the way of his morals and principles.

In an e-mail exchange, the chief executive of the biggest retailer told a racist customer, “You’re the kind of customer I’m happy to lose.”

It was last week that a racist customer used incendiary rhetoric to criticize the company’s support of the Black Lives Matter movement.

“This sort of hate shouldn’t be allowed to hide in the shadows,” Bezos wrote in an Instagram post over the weekend. “You’re the kind of customer I’m happy to lose.”

Bezos said the customer’s email was “sickening” in the Instagram post. The customer’s email was included in a screenshot and contains profanity filled insults and racist slurs. It says that Amazon’s decision to show solidarity with protesters “will ruin [Bezos’] company.”

The email reads, “You obviously are not an idiot or you wouldn’t have the financial success that you have had. I was placing an order with your company when I discovered your statement of support for Black Lives Matter. I canceled my order and I know for a fact I won’t be the only one.”

“It’s important to make it visible. This is just one example of the problem. And, Dave, you’re the kind of customer I’m happy to lose.” Bezos remarked.

Amazon announced last week that it will donate $10 million to social justice organizations. The company also tweeted that the “inequitable and brutal treatment of Black people” must stop.

“We believe Black lives matter,” Amazon said. “We stand in solidarity with our Black employees, customers, and partners, and are committed to helping build a country and a world where everyone can live with dignity and free from fear.”
