In an article featured on Deadline, Marvel Universe and Spider-Man are parting ways.

Spider-Man is set to leave Marvel Universe after Disney and Sony split however two more films starring Tom Holland and directed by John Watts are still reportedly planned.

Disagreements regarding studio financing for the films led to Disney and Sony splitting. The agreement would have given new terms to a co-financing stake between the two studios.

According to the Deadline report, Disney asked that future Spider-Man films have a 50/50 co-financing arrangement between the two studios. Sony refused and proposed instead to keep the current arrangement, where Marvel receives roughly 5% of first dollar gross. Disney then refused Sony’s offer to keep the arrangement.

A spokesperson for Sony told the Hollywood Reporter on Tuesday, “Much of today’s news about Spider-Man has mischaracterized recent discussions about Kevin Feige’s involvement in the franchise. We are disappointed, but respect Disney’s decision not to have him continue as a lead producer of our next live action Spider-Man film,”

The spokesperson added, “We hope this might change in the future, but understand that the many new responsibilities that Disney has given him – including all their newly added Marvel properties – do not allow time for him to work on IP they do not own. Kevin is terrific and we are grateful for his help and guidance and appreciate the path he has helped put us on, which we will continue.”
