This Racist Prom Proposal Has The Internet All Fired Up

It’s prom season and while many proposals are sweet and touching, there is one that has made many on the internet very angry.

Seriously, what were these girls thinking? Didn’t anyone who saw the sign say, “Hey.. this is not a good idea,” to these young ladies? Anyone at all?

The students in the photo, allegedly attend Monarch High School in Coconut Creek, Fla., and are standing with a sign that reads, “You may be picking cotton, but we’re picking you to go to prom with us.”

The photo was made public through a tweet posted by Jon Aro, a Monarch High School alum. His Twitter handle is @papichombo. “It is two thousand and f***ing seventeen,” he wrote captioning the image.

His post was a screenshot of a Instagram account that is now defunct, but showed the picture of three girls, two white and one black, holding the sign.

It’s unknown wherte the photo was taken and who the proposal is for, but it has been retweeted more than 5,000 times and liked more than 8,000 times.

Aro told Yahoo Style via Instagram direct message that a friend of his posted the image on her private Instagram page. He did not like the joke and decided to make it public.

“I decided to post it on Twitter because it is 2017 and stuff like this is completely revolting,” he explains. “I had thought we had been past the plight of racism. Apparently we hadn’t.”

Many are very angry at the photo. Powley MaAgbor @PowleyMaAgbor wrote, “things like this just remind me of the ignorance & stupidity of our society today. Sad just sad.”

It’s odd that an African American girl is in the photo and has no issue with what the sign says.

King Friend Zone @donaldofficiall wrote, “this is what happens when your African American and don’t understand this country history towards you.”
