Joaquin Phoenix, widely known from ‘Joker ’ where he acted as a lone ranger comic book villain won his first ever Oscar for the best actor in “Joker 2019” at the 92nd academy awards held in Los Angeles, California.

Phoenix aged 45, delivered one of the most emotional acceptance speeches at the event held at the night of February 9.

Phoenix said he had to cut down about 50 pounds (22 kg) so as to play Arthur Fleck in Joker, a skinny mentally disturbed clown who becomes famous in New York during the 1980’s following an unplanned act of violent.

“I’ve been a scoundrel in my life, I’ve been selfish, I’ve been cruel at times, I’ve been hard to work with. I’m grateful so many of you in this room have given me a second chance…… When he was 17, my brother wrote this lyric, he said, Run to the rescue with love and peace will follow,” said Phoenix in his acceptance speech.

His brother, River Phoenix died in 1993 following a drug overdose at a night club in the U.S. At the time of his death River was 23 years old.

This Oscar win makes Phoenix the second person to win an Oscars under the joker character. Heath Ledger, in 2009 won an Oscar best supporting actor for playing Joker in ‘The Dark Knight’.
