Britney Spears’ Niece In Critical Condition After ATV Accident

Jamie Lynn Spears, the younger sister of pop princess Britney Spears, watched her 8-year old daughter Maddie drive an ATV into a pond this weekend.

According to a police report, Maddie had tried to avoid running over a nearby draining ditch and steered the vehicle to avoid it. The report said, “In doing so, she overcorrected causing the ATV to enter the pond. The ATV and child were instantly submerged in the water right before their eyes.”

According to PEOPLE who received a statement from Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff Daniel Edwards, the accident happened right before 3:00 p.m. on Sunday and occured on the family’s property. Both Spears and her husband Jamie Watson watched the child go into the pond.

“Within seconds the child’s mother, step-father and other family members reached the pond, dove in and attempted to rescue the child to no avail. The child was trapped and secured by the seatbelt and the ATV’s safety netting. Within two minutes, Acadian Ambulance Services arrived and assisted in freeing the child from the cold waters,” continued the police report.

Maddie is at a nearby hospital and is in critical but stable condition.

“All I can say is pray for our baby Maddie,” said Spears’ father, Jamie Spears, talking to Entertainment Tonight.
