Alligator Kills 2-Year Old Boy At Disney World
Headlines this week revealed one of the most horrific ways for any child to die. A 2-year old Nebraska boy was dragged into a lake by an alligator on Tuesday evening at Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort & Spa in Bay Lake, Florida.
Before finding the child’s body, Orange County Sheriff Jerry Demings said there’s “no question” the missing 2-year-old is dead. According to officials, the attack was “not survivable.” 50 personnel from the sheriff’s office alone have worked on the recovery effort. Dozens of rescue crews including the Florida Fish and Wildlife, and Reedy Creek Fire Rescue were also actively searching the lake with sonar equipment.
In wake of the attack, Walt Disney Resort has temporarily shuttered its resort beach areas and recreational marinas.
Eyewitnesses saw the young boy being grabbed by the alligator at around 9:15pm. He had been “playing” in the water. Officials have estimated that the alligator was between 4 and 7 feet long.
“The father entered the water and tried to grab the child from the gator, but was not successful,” Demings said. The boy’s parents then alerted a nearby lifeguard.
While many may wonder if the parents are at fault for not paying more attention, there are no warning signs of gators in the area. There are only notices posted against swimming in the man-made lake.
There may not have been much time to react with how quickly this horrific event transpired.
“Everyone here at the Walt Disney World Resort is devastated by this tragic accident. Our thoughts are with the family,” said Jacquee Wahler, vice president of Walt Disney World Resort.
