Tesla’s First Diversity Report Reveals Shocking Leadership
Electric vehicle maker Tesla has released its very first diversity report that has revealed leadership is shockingly 83% male and 59% white.
Moving forward the car giant has said it would recruit from historically Black colleges and universities and conduct unconscious bias trainings for managers and recruiters.
In the inaugural Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Impact Report, Tesla had shown a “majority minority” U.S. workforce however employees in leadership roles at a director level or higher came in at 83% male and 59% White.
Tesla’s report offers fewer details than diversity reports from major tech companies such as Apple or Google. These two companies started publishing demographic information about their workforces back in 2014.
Here are some highlights from the report of how Tesla’s U.S. workforce looks like:
Males at the company represented approximately: 79% of the workforce, 83% of leadership, 75% of new hires and 77% of promotions in 2020.
Females at Tesla represented approximately: 21% of the workforce, 17% of leadership, 25% of new hires and 23% of all promotions in 2020.
Black and African American employees represented approximately: 10% of the workforce, 4% of leadership, 12% of new hires and 10% of promotions in 2020.
Asian employees represented approximately: 21% of the workforce, 25% of leadership, 20% of new hires and 23% of promotions in 2020.
Hispanic and Latino or Latina employees represented approximately: 22% of the workforce, 4% of leadership, 27% of new hires and 24% of promotions in 2020.
White employees represented approximately: 34% of the workforce, 59% of leadership, 32% of new hires and 35% of promotions in 2020.
The company included people from Pacific Islander, Native American, Native Hawaiian and Alaska Native communities and added them to an “Additional Groups” category.
The “Additional Groups” category represented approximately: 7% of the workforce and 1% of leadership.
Veterans currently make up about 4% of Tesla’s U.S. workforce.
The automaker wrote about the release of its first “Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Report” report in the United States and said, “Today, we are publishing our first ever U.S. Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Report which outlines the current state of our DEI position and actions we are taking to engage with employees, candidates and community members, as we encourage talented people from all backgrounds to join us on our mission to accelerate the world’s transition to sustainable energy. We look forward to sharing further progress in future reports as we continue to innovate and enhance our diversity, equity and inclusion practices.”
