Target stores saw a big increase in sales of alcohol last year, and is now planning to expand its craft beer and booze selections in more than 300 of its stores.

It was over 20 years ago in 1996 that Target began to sell alcohol in its stores. So far 1,400 of the 1,800 stores Target has are carrying alcoholic beverages.

In its first quarter earning call, Target’s Chief Merchandising Officer and EVP Mark J. Tritton stated that Target will be expanding alcohol in more than 100 stores in the second quarter and even more in the third quarter and forward.

“We’ve done a lot of work to ensure that our assortment reflects what guests on a local level want and guests are responding,” Senior Manager of Public Relations Amy Joiner explained.

“Our store leaders are empowered to adjust their assortments based on their guests’ preferences.”

According to Joiner, the giant retailer is looking into remodels and even new liquor licenses this year.

“We’ve done a lot of work to ensure that our assortment reflects what guests on a local level want and guests are responding,” Joiner commented. “Our store leaders are empowered to adjust their assortments based on their guests’ preferences.”
