Roku Active Account Metric Tops 50 Million For First Time
Streaming platform king Roku announced on Wednesday that it expects to report 51.2 million active accounts for its fourth quarter. This would be the first period in which Roku’s active-account numbers have passed 50 million.
According to analysts surveyed by FactSet, the number expected had been at 50.3 million active accounts for the quarter.
With these numbers, the company is now neck and neck with Amazon who reported that its Fire TV platform exceeded 50 million monthly active users in 2020.
Roku has also disclosed that its expecting that Roku users streamed about 17 billion hours of content in the fourth quarter while nalysts surveyed by FactSet were waiting for 16.3 billion streaming hours.
The company will deliver a fuller set of metrics in its fourth-quarter earnings report next month.
“I’m excited that more than 50 million households now turn to Roku for their TV viewing,” said Roku CEO Anthony Wood. “The world is moving to streaming and we look forward to continuing to help viewers, advertisers, content publishers, and TV manufacturers succeed in the Streaming Decade.”

Nearly one third of U.S. households have cut traditional pay TV, according to Roku’s 2020 cord cutting study. eMarketer also predicts that by the end of 2024, fewer than half of U.S. households will subscribe to a traditional pay TV service.
Shares of Roku have gained 60% over the past three months.
