Robert Mueller’s Indictment of 13 Russians Involved Facebook and Twitter This Way
The biggest headline to hit the news on Friday was that special counsel Robert Mueller has filed an indictment charging 13 Russians with crimes that are related to interfering in the 2016 elections.
So how did Facebook and Twitter have something to do with it? Although Mueller has not charged Twitter or Facebook with anything, the two social networks were effective in helping the Russians and their scheme.
According to the indictment, a well organized Russian scheme starting in 2014 “had a strategic goal to sow discord in the U.S. political system, including the 2016 U.S. presidential election.”
The indictment also states, “The Russians’ plan was “to communicate derogatory information about Hillary Clinton, to denigrate other candidates such as Ted Cruz and Marco Rubio, and to support Bernie Sanders and then-candidate Donald Trump.”
The indictment mentions social networking giant Facebook 35 times and Twitter 9 times.
Both companies have had to explain themselves to Congress.
