Mark Zuckerberg Faces Congress and Had This to Say

Facebook’s CEO Mark Zuckerberg showed up in a suit and a purple tie to Capital Hill on Monday to explain himself to U.S. lawmakers over his company’s misuse of users’ data.

Zuckerberg apologized for how data was improperly shared with a political consultancy agency called Cambridge Analytica. The social media giant’s leader is facing two days of congressional hearings this week to explain how over 80 million Facebook users had their data compromised.

The U.S. House Energy and Commerce Committee released a statement from Zuckerberg on Monday that reads, “We didn’t take a broad enough view of our responsibility, and that was a big mistake. It was my mistake, and I’m sorry.”

All eyes are on the hearings this week because it may lead to Congress pushing for stricter regulation on the company which could effect how it gets advertisers.

In his written testimony he has also said, “It’s clear now that we didn’t do enough to prevent these tools from being used for harm. That goes for fake news, foreign interference in elections, and hate speech, as well as developers and data privacy.”

According to the CEO, Facebook was “too slow to spot and respond to Russian interference, and we’re working hard to get better.”

Zuckerberg is scheduled to appear before three congressional committees on Tuesday and Wednesday.
