Many Chipotle Customers Are Sick Again
Shares of Chipotle fell hard after Wall Street learned that at least 140 customers claimed they turned ill after eating at a Chipotle location in Powell,Ohio in the last week.
Chipotle shares fell as much as 8% again on Tuesday after the company poorly executed a free guacamole deal for National Avocado Day.
Customers were promised free avocado with any online or in-app purchase of an entree on July 31st, but the app either didn’t work for some customers or there wasn’t even a space to insert the promo code “AVOCADO.” Online users also received a “technical difficulties” notification.
“The local health department has informed us of two customer complaints of illness at one restaurant in Powell, Ohio. We acted quickly and closed this single restaurant out of an abundance of caution yesterday. We are working with the local health department and we plan to reopen this restaurant today,” remarked Chipotle Chief Communications Officer Laurie Schalow to Yahoo Finance.
The Ohio location was closed on Monday afternoon as of 1:15 pm and did not re-open for business on Tuesday as had been expected. A Chipotle worker at the location said, “We are currently working with the health department and we should know more within the hour.”
