Google’s Next A.I. Research Center Will Be On This Continent

Google has made the decision to put its next A.I. (artificial intelligence) research center in Africa, in the city of Accra in Ghana.

Expected later this year, it will be the very first on the African continent and according to an expert on the region who spoke to CNBC, Google may have chosen Ghana because of its high quality education system and political

Lucy James, associate consultant with Control Risks’ Africa team, said the country of Ghana may have appealed to the company due to its education system and other feeder institutions.

According to James, Google is focused on “drawing in local talent and there’s no shortage of that in Ghana.”

Google made the announcement via a blog post on Wednesday and wrote, “We’re committed to collaborating with local universities and research centers, as well as working with policy makers on the potential uses of AI in Africa.”

Google already hosts A.I. research centers in Paris, Tokyo, New York, and Mountain View where Google has its headquarters.
