GM and Amazon Team Up to Install Alexa into Cars
GM drivers next year may have something to be excited about. Amazon and GM have teamed up to install Alexa into millions of the car manufacturer’s cars.
Alexa, Amazon’s popular voice assistant, will be available for download on 2018 and newer GM model vehicles in the first half of 2020.
By having Alexa, drivers will be able to control smart home devices as well as in-vehicle features such as their phone, radio and navigation.
Detroit-based General Motors announced the news this week with Amazon, revealing that the technology will become available on model year 2018 and newer Buick, Cadillac, Chevrolet and GMC vehicles with compatible infotainment systems in the first half of next year.
“This brings the best of two fantastic companies,” stated Santiago Chamorro, GM’s vice president of Global Connected Services. “We have listened to our customers and their insights are clear, they want to carry those ecosystems into their vehicles.”
Ned Curic, vice president of Amazon Alexa Automotive, said the integration of Alexa into GM vehicles via an app is a “much further and deeper integration” than anything the company has previously announced with other automakers.
“It’s quite unique. What the GM engineering team has done is unparalleled to date.”
Officials have said that data produced from the voice commands will be shared between both companies.
There were no financial details of the partnership disclosed. GM howver said that additional information will be available closer to launch..
