FreshDirect Is Taking On Wal-Mart And Amazon In The Online Grocery Arena

There was a time when FreshDirect, a company founded in 1999, that serves New York City and five states in the Northeast, was the dominant player in the area for online groceries.

This was before Amazon started Amazon Fresh and before Walmart’s Jet.

According to Ackerman, FreshDirect is not an online grocer but “a food-tech company.”

He says FreshDirect relies on technology to create the infrastructure and supply chain necessary to deliver food and beverages in as little as an hour.

“When we first started, people thought we were crazy,” stated FreshDirect CEO Jason Ackerman.

According to FreshDirect’s website, the company’s food is fresher and its shelf life is longer. It lasts up to 7 more days in your fridge than the food you buy from a traditional store.
