Facebook Moderator Dies After Watching Horrible Abuse Videos

One of the worst jobs in the world apparently is being a moderator for Facebook’s content.

According to a report from “The Verge,” there are some very concerning working conditions for a group of contracted Facebook moderators.

Thousands of workers work for a company called Cognizant, and receive about $28,000 per year to police the site, according to the report in The Verge.

A dozen current and former Facebook moderators have described the work environment as filth-ridden and emotionally disturbing.

Watching graphic violence against animals and humans, child pornography, and hate speech, could get the best of anyone, and it did.

Keith Utley, a former Coast Guard lieutenant commander who worked an overnight shift moderating content at one of Cognizant’s sites in Tampa, Fla.

It was last March that Utley was found slumped over at this desk. Despite CPR by his colleagues, he died shortly after getting to the hospital.

“The stress they put on him — it’s unworldly,” one of Utley’s managers told The Verge. “I did a lot of coaching. I spent some time talking with him about things he was having issues seeing. And he was always worried about getting fired.”
