Facebook is Getting Rid of This Feature on its Site
Facebook announced on Friday in a blog post that it would be removing the “trending” topics feature from its platform.
The feature compiles all of the popular news and has been a concern on whether the articles come from trustworthy sources.
According to the social network giant, the trending feature accounted for less than 1.5% of clicks to news publishers on average. The company said in its blog post that it would be testing ways to display news with a “breaking news label,” a “today in” label and a “News video in watch” label.
Alex Hardiman, head of news products, said, “We’ve seen that the way people consume news on Facebook is changing to be primarily on mobile and increasingly through news video. So we’re exploring new ways to help people stay informed about timely, breaking news that matters to them, while making sure the news they see on Facebook is from trustworthy and quality sources.
He ended the blog post with, “People tell us they want to stay informed about what is happening around them. We are committed to ensuring the news that people see on Facebook is high quality, and we’re investing in ways to better draw attention to breaking news when it matters most.”
