Facebook Has been Listening to Conversations on Facebook Messenger

While many may not be surprised that a social network like Facebook listens in on conversations, it may feel a little violating for some.

Facebook had been listening to conversations on Facebook Messenger and transcribing them but has stopped last week. This is according to a Facebook spokesperson.

Bloomberg broke the report this week, stating that Facebook contractors were listening to and transcribing select voice conversations that were held using its Facebook Messenger chat platform.

Reportedly Facebook had the contractors transcribe chats in an effort to improve artificial intelligence.

“Much like Apple and Google, we paused human review of audio more than a week ago,” a Facebook spokesperson told CNBC.

It was only recently that Facebook agreed to pay a $5 billion fine to settle an investigation by the Federal Trade Commission into whether it had violated the terms of a previous agreement in how it handled the data of its users.
