Disney Announces What its Streaming Service Will Offer for $6.99 a Month
Disney’s Disney+ streaming service is highly anticipated and it was this week that the company finally announced what it would offer with the platform.
According to Disney’s CEO Bob Iger, the company’s brand name itself gives it an edge over other rivals.
Disney + will be launched on Nov. 12. and will cost $6.99 per month and $69.99 for an annual subscription.
Disney+ will include a boatload of family content, including Disney’s back catalog of movies, “Star Wars” films, Marvel movies and 30 seasons of “The Simpsons.”
Not all analysts are convinced that Disney + has what it takes to beat Netlflix. “We do not view Disney+ as a strong alternative to Netflix,” said SunTrust tech analyst Matthew Thornton.
“Bottom-line, Disney+ features family content, while Netflix offers a much broader range of content with the majority of the most-searched content on the platform.”
“We still do not view it as a major threat to Netflix subscriber numbers given Netflix’s quality & quantity of content, along with the global secular shift toward streaming,” also remarked J.P. Morgan analyst Doug Anmuth.
“We’re designing a product that we want to be accessible to as many consumers as possible,” said Iger during the investor day presentation. “We just feel that Disney is loved by so many millions and millions of people around the world.”
Shares of Netflix fell on Disney’s announcement as Wall Street digested the news while Disney shares soared as much as 12% on Friday.
Netflix recently announced plans to raise monthly prices on its most popular plan from $11 to $13.
