AMC to Re-open July 30th as Summer Blockbusters are Pushed Back
Many movie buffs have been anxiously anticipating movie theaters opening back up and they may have to wait a little longer now.
AMC has announced that it has shifted its reopening to July 30th as Hollywood has pushed back on its blockbusters to later dates.
The company’s move comes as Hollywood has delayed the release of major blockbuster features like “Tenet” and “Mulan.”
AMC said that it would operate at a limited capacity and block off seating to maintain safety when it
reopens. The company also said that it will require patrons to wear masks.
The largest theater chain in the U.S. had previously planned to start reopening theaters in mid-July in time for the releases of “Tenet” and “Mulan” but Warner Bros. and Disney pushed their releases into August as cases of coronavirus continued to spike in parts of the U.S.
“Tenet” is now expected in theaters on Aug. 12 and “Mulan” is slated to arrive on Aug. 21.
In early June AMC said it had “substantial doubts” about its ability to continue operations if it were forced to keep its theaters closed for an extended period of time.
The first round of approximately 450 locations will resume operations on the 30th. The company said it expects its more than 600 U.S. theaters to be “essentially to full operation” by early August.
“Our theatre general managers across the U.S. started working full time again today and are back in their theatres gearing up to get their buildings fully ready just a few weeks from now for moviegoers,” CEO Adam Aron stated. “That happy day, when we can welcome guests back into most of our U.S. theatres, will be Thursday, July 30.”
