Amazon Unveils Scout the Delivery Robot

Amazon customers shouldn’t be surprised if they see a robot one day delivering their packages.

The e-commerce giant has debuted Scout this week, a small robot the size of a “small cooler” that can roll along sidewalks and up to the door step of customers.

Amazon announced on Wednesday that Scout is currently operating in Snohomish County, Washington. The company is starting off with just six of the devices and it will operate on weekdays in daylight hours.

Scout will navigate to the customer’s door and automatically opens a top hatch where the customer can reach for their package.

The self-driving delivery device is the company’s latest developing in its logistics business.

“The devices will autonomously follow their delivery route but will initially be accompanied by an Amazon employee,” Amazon stated.

“We developed Amazon Scout at our research and development lab in Seattle, ensuring the devices can safely and efficiently navigate around pets, pedestrians and anything else in their path.”
