Vladimir Putin Says He Will Step Down From Leading Russia In This Year
With Russia’s constitution banning anyone from serving two consecutive presidential terms, Vladimir Putin announced this week that he would be stepping down in 2024.
2024 is when Putin’s current term will expire.
This doesn’t mean he can’t be president again. He previously stepped down in 2008 after serving back to back terms and return in 2012.
Putin made his remarks about stepping down to reporters at an economic forum in St Petersburg.
He said, “I have always strictly abided by and abide by the constitution of the Russian Federation.”
“In the constitution it’s clearly written that nobody can serve more than two terms in a row … I intend to abide by this rule.”
Putin recently won re-election in March, extending his tenure by six years to 2024. He is the country’s longest serving leader since Josef Stalin.
