Transgender Drivers are Being Kicked off of Uber for This Reason
Drivers across the U.S. who are transgender are finding that their accounts have been either permanently suspended or temporarily suspended.
An Uber security feature requiring drivers to take a self to verify their identity is leading to these terminations.
Uber requires that the driver’s selfie match other photos on file. This is troublesome for transgender drivers who are in transition.
The Uber security feature is called Real-Time ID Check and was rolled out in September 2016 to “protect both riders and drivers.”
“A transperson can’t be expected to update their license every three months or so just to avoid being deactivated,” said a transgender driver named Janey Webb, who began her transition around the time she started working for Uber in October 2017.
Another transgender driver from Michigan, named Lindsay, has said, “When you have a system that is so overly automated, people like myself fall within the cracks.”
