We all know soda is bad, but many can’t stop drinking it anyway. Even the diet versions aren’t too healthy for us, but soda is one of the most sought after beverages. The sugary versions are linked to obesity and weight gain.

South Africa is taking a stand though in order to reduce obesity. The country’s Treasury is proposing a 20 percent tax on sugar-sweetened beverages.

Finance Minister Pravin Gordhan said back in February that the government was proposing a new sugar tax from April of 2017.

South Africa has the highest instances of obesity in sub-Saharan Africa so this kind of a tax could be very beneficial in regards to the country’s obesity epidemic.
