The Government Shutdown May Be Finally Over
It looks like a temper tantrum by our president, which caused weeks of misery for 800,000 workers and their families, may finally be coming to an end.
President Trump announced on Friday a deal to end the shutdown and temporarily reopen e government. Congress is expected to move quickly to pass the legislation.
Despite this sounding like good news, Trump has already threatened to let funding lapse once again in the middle of next month, or even declare a national emergncy to bypass Congress.
If signed by President Trump, the deal would restart government operations through Feb. 15 — without the money he has demanded to build his proposed border wall.
“We really have no choice but to build a powerful wall or steel barrier,” the president said. “If we don’t get a fair deal from Congress, the government will either shut down on Feb. 15 again or I will use the powers afforded to me under the laws and the Constitution of the United States to address this emergency.”
“This is an opportunity for all parties to work together for the benefit of our whole, beautiful, wonderful nation,” he said.
Trump has pledged to make sure the federal workers who have not been paid for weeks, get paid “very quickly or as soon as possible.” The employees could get their pay in four or five days, an administration official told CNBC.
