Terrorism Hits Manhattan as Truck Plows Through Crowd
New York City’s Mayor Bill de Blasio has called Tuesday afternoon’s terrorist attack a “cowardly act of terror.”
A man drove a rented Home Depot truck into a bike path in Manhattan that killed eight people at around 3:05 p.m.
The path runs about 10 blocks from the West Side Highway all the way up until a few blocks fom the One World Trade Center.
According to NYC police, the suspect entered the West Street pedestrian and bike path north of Chambers Street, hitting multiple people on the path.
A police officer is credited with stopping the attack by shooting the suspect, Sayfullo Saipov, 29, in the stomach. He is in custody according to ABC News.
Saipov is from Tampa, Florida and was witnessed to have screamed “Allahu Akbar” after the crash.
The truck even collided with a school bus and two school staff members and two children have been injured. One of the students is in critical condition.
New York City Schools Chancellor Carmen Farina stated, “Today there was an act of terror in close proximity to several schools in lower Manhattan,” Farina said. “We stand with the entire city as we mourn this senseless loss of life. We are grateful to the first responders and school staff who work tirelessly to help keep our schools and communities safe.”
The annual Halloween parade in the West Village will still take place according to officials.
