Streaming Giant Netflix Launches First Mobile Games

Streaming platform Netflix has begun to roll out its mobile video games to some Android users this week.

According to a CNBC report, subscribers have the option of playing five different games on the app, including “Stranger Things: 1984,” “Stranger Things 3: The Game,” “Shooting Hoops,” “Card Blast” and “Teeter Up.”

The games are available in the Netflix app and are included with Netflix subscriptions. They will not include advertisements or in-app purchases.

While the company said it will build games as a standalone product that competes with other services, executives hope popular characters or games may be able to help with video content decisions in the future.

“Maybe someday we’ll see a game that spawns a film or a series,” Greg Peters, Netflix’s chief operating officer and chief product officer said earlier this year. “That would be an amazing place to get to, to really see the rich interplay between these different forms of entertainment.”

The company notes that while some games will require an Internet connection, “others will be available offline,” and, perhaps curiously, that games are not permitted on kids’ accounts.

No word yet on when to expect any further titles or platforms.
