Philippines President Declares “Separation” From The U.S.

Well looks like the Philippines aren’t too fond of the U.S. In a speech on Thursday in Beijing, Philippines’ President Rodrigo Duterte declared he is done with having United States as a longstanding ally.

“I announce my separation from the United States,” said Duterte to applause. As he spoke between languages, he said, “America does not control our lives. Enough bullshit.”

“How can you be the most powerful industrial country when you owe China and you are not paying it?”

Duterte has suspended joint US-Philippine patrols in the South China Sea, and has also threatened an end to joint military exercises.

According to the official Xinhua news agency, Duterte had just before met his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping at the Great Hall of the People on Tiananmen Square, where both men pledged trust and friendship. The countries have had a maritime dispute but Xi called the two countries “neighbours across the sea” with “no reason for hostility or confrontation.”

According to Duterte, this meeting was “historic.”
