Peloton Recalls Thousands of Bikes Over This Issue
First reported by Business Insider, fitness equipment maker Peloton has recalled pedals on thousands of its bikes after reports of injuries.
The company said in a blog post recently that the recall applies to PR70P pedals, which were placed on bikes sold between July 2013 and May 2016. This affects about 27,000 bikes. The recall is due to the risk of the axle breaking and injuring users.
Peloton had said that it has already received 120 reports of pedal breakages and 16 reports of injuries due to the first-generation pedals. Of those injuries, five people required medical care, including stitches, the company said.
While no other versions of its pedals have been affected by the recall, Peloton said it recommends customers change their bike pedals annually.
“There is no greater priority than the safety and well-being of Peloton members,” the company said to CNBC. “This recall only affects members who still have their out-of-warranty original pedals on the affected bikes sold in the specific time period.”
In a blog post the company wrote, “If your Bike has pedals with white lettering spelling “PELOTON” without the orange Peloton logo, they are not subject to this recall.”
These pedals are outside the one-year warranty. Peloton recommends that Members change their Peloton Bike pedals annually. No other pedals are affected by this recall.
If your Bike is fitted with a PR70P clip-in pedal, stop using your Bike until you have installed new pedals said Peloton.
Shares of Peloton have rocketed over 380% year to date.
