New York Attorney General is Suing Target and Walmart Over This Product

New York’s Attorney General, Barbara Underwood is suing both Walmart and Target as well as LaRose Industries over a child’s toy that is contaminated with lead.

The office of the attorney general conducted tests which found that “Cra-Z-Jewelz” jewelry-making kits had lead levels that were up to ten times higher than the federal limit. The parts contained led levels of 120 to 980 parts per million according to a statement from the office. The federal limit for a child’s product is 100ppm.

These findings had led to a nationwide recall of the product.

Underwood’s office is alleging that the companies had violated several state laws between 2015 and 2016. Walmart and Target both sold the products that were imported by LaRose Industries.

Underwood is pursuing civil penalties and is also finding ways to implement measures to prevent future sales of lead-contaminated toys.
“No parent should have to worry that their child’s toy may be toxic. As we allege, these companies imported and sold toys with dangerous levels of toxic lead – jeopardizing the health of New York’s children and breaking the law,” Underwood said.

A spokeswoman for Target said that Target is committed to “high quality and safe products” and that it pulled the product “immediately and voluntarily” in 2016.
A Walmart spokesperson said, “We’ve discussed this matter with the New York Attorney General’s office and will address the allegations and demands with the court.”
