India’s “Gold Man” Has Been Brutally Murdered

Anybody who wears hundreds of thousands of dollars on their body must be pretty brave to walk the streets.

In India there was such a man by the name of Datta Phuge. He shot to fame back in 2013 when he bought a shirt that was made out of 3kg of gold and worth $250,000. It obviously was one of the world’s most expensive shirts and Phuge was delighted with it. Mr. Phuge also would wear gold all over his body including his knuckles, neck, and wrists.

“Some people ask me why I’m wearing so much gold but it was my dream. People have different aspirations. Some elite people want to own an Audi or Mercedes, and have big cars. I chose gold,” he told the BBC in 2013. As a money lender working in western Pune, India, he was often referred to as the “gold man.”

Mr. Phuge met his demise this week and was brutally attacked to death by some 12 people. Police believe the attack had something to do with money and so far four people have been detained for questioning.

One of the suspects invited him and his 22-year-old son to celebrate a birthday at an open ground in Dighi area. Instead of actually celebrating a birthday, Phuge was attacked by stones and a sharp weapon.

His son was spared but had to witness his own father being murdered.
