Google Will Allow This Many Employees to Work from Home
The COVID-19 pandemic may be easing up with many people planning to return to work soon.
Tech giant Google has announced that its relaxing its approach to returning to work and will now allow 20% of its workforce telecommute.
Google will now allow employees to work from other locations for a longer period each year. The company said on Wednesday that it now expects 20% of its employees to work from home after its offices reopen later this year.
It was this past December that Google had said it planned to have workers spend three days a week in the office. Now the company is expecting 60% of its employees to be on site for a few days a week, with 20% working in new office locations and 20% working from home. That is according to a spokesperson who spoke to CNBC.
The company spokesperson also revealed that any given Google employee can now temporarily work for four weeks per year from a location other than their assigned office, an increase from two weeks.
Additionally, employees can keep working from home through September and some employees might need to be at their facilities more than three days per week because of their work.
Google is accelerating reopening plans in some parts of the U.S. on a volunteer basis ahead of the Sept. 1 return deadline, according to internal documents viewed by CNBC.
“It’s now been a year since many of us have been working from home, and the thought of returning to the office might inspire different emotions,” wrote Fiona Cicconi, Google’s new head of people operations, in a company wide email. Cicconi advised employees to get the
Covid-19 vaccine but said it’s not mandatory.
