Elon Musk Thinks This Tesla Car Might Flop
Tesla’s CEO Elon Musk has admitted that the company’s anticipated cybertruck could be a flop.
The electric vehicle maker’s chief executive revealed on Thursday that even if the cybertruck flops, he doesn’t care, as he loves its shape. The cybertruck has a unique trapezoid design.
While Tesla does not always disclose detailed numbers about preorders for its vehicles, the company did reveal last September that it had received well over 500,000 orders for truck.
Musk made his remarks about the truck in an exchange with fans on Twitter. He said there is “always some chance” his company’s forthcoming Cybertruck will “flop” and that he plans to keep the Cybertruck “production design” almost exactly the same as its show car.
He admitted that he “doesn’t care” about any risk that the Cybertruck could flop, because he personally loves its design.
The CEO wrote, “To be frank, there is always some chance that Cybertruck will flop, because it is so unlike anything else. I don’t care. I love it so much even if others don’t. Other trucks look like copies of the same thing, but Cybertruck looks like it was made by aliens from the future.”
It was in 2019 that the truck had a launch event which created some major discussion. Musk had asked the company’s design leader Franz von Holzhausen to try to smash the vehicle’s windows, which he did. Von Holzhausen threw a metal ball at one of the windows and it had shattered to Musk’s shock.
Despite this setback, Musk said that Tesla saw 250,000 within about a week of the Cybertruck’s debut.
Musk disclosed at the company’s annual shareholder meeting that Tesla had received so many Cybertruck orders that the company stopped counting. “The orders are gigantic,” he said, ”… well over half a million orders. I think maybe six hundred thou— it’s a lot, basically. We stopped counting.”
Musk also revealed this week that Tesla doesn’t plan to put door handles on the Cybertruck.
