Disney to Have These Blockbuster Movies for the Next Eight Years
Looks like Disney means business!
The company has staked a claim on the holiday box office until the year 2027 with back to back ‘Star Wars’ movies and “Avatar” movies.
It was this week that Disney released its updated slate of theatrical releases.
“Positioning highly lucrative franchises where they’ve proven enormously successful on the calendar before is studio strategy 101,” commented Shawn Robbins, chief analyst at Boxoffice.com.
“This is a largely risk-averse industry, so why change something that isn’t broken? It’s both safe and smart because it’s virtually guaranteed to succeed so long as the movies deliver creatively, but it also underlines the incredibly deep bench of IP which Disney has control of — and the level of confidence they have in it relative to other studios.”
Disney’s upcoming December slate is as follows:
December 2019 — “Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker”
December 2020 — “Cruella”
December 2021 — “Avatar 2”
December 2022 — Untitled “Star Wars” film
December 2023 — “Avatar 3”
December 2024 — Untitled “Star Wars” film
December 2025 — “Avatar 4”
December 2026 — Untitled “Star Wars” film
December 2027 — “Avatar 5”
“We’re excited to put in place a robust and diverse slate that lays the foundation of our long-term strategy, bringing together a breadth of films from Disney, Pixar, Marvel, Lucasfilm, Fox, Fox Searchlight and Blue Sky Studios to create an extraordinary collection of cinematic experiences for audiences around the world,” said Cathleen Taff, President, Theatrical Distribution, Franchise Management, and Business & Audience Insights, The Walt Disney Studios.
She added, “With a strong summer already in place, we are eager to carry that momentum forward over the coming years thanks to a creative wellspring of bold and imaginative stories coming from our world-class studios – including several new chapters of two revered franchises, Avatar and Star Wars.”
