Bed Bath & Beyond is Closing A Lot of Stores This Year

As part of a plan to close about 200 locations by 2022, Bed Bath & Beyond has announced over 40 store closures for this year.

It was last July that the retailer had laid out a store closure road map in order to focus more on its profitable shops and invest in digital.

During this time Bed Bath & Beyond had said that by following through with these actions, the company could expect to generate annual cost savings of between $250 million and $350 million, excluding related one-time expenses.

The company also said the roughly 200 stores generated about $1 billion in annual net sales in fiscal 2019, and it aimed to move at least 15% to 20% of those dollars online or to other stores.

Now 43 stores will be liquidated and expected to close by the end of February, a company spokesman confirmed to CNBC.

As of Aug. 29, Bed Bath had 1,476 stores, which include Buybuy Baby.

Shares of the company have gained a little over 25% since a year ago and third quarter earnings are expected to be released tomorrow.
