This is How Much Amazon’s ‘Lord of the Ring’s Series Will Cost for the First Season

One of the most costly television series to ever be made will be the “Lord of the Rings’ series on Amazon. The show’s first season has a price tag that could be around $465 million.

The figure have been released as part of the New Zealand government’s Official Information Act and first reported by the New Zealand-based outlet Stuff.

Amazon is looking to film five seasons of the show in the country and possibly produce a spinoff series as well.

“But what I can tell you is Amazon is going to spend about $650 million in season one alone,” Stuart Nash told Morning Report about the fantasy fiction show. The figure Nash provided was in local currency.

In comparison to other shows, HBO’s “Game of Thrones” had cost about $100 million per season.

It was in 2017 that tech giant Amazon had spent around $250 million for the rights to the Tolkien property.

“This will be the largest television series ever made,” Nash remarked.

Amazon’s spending in New Zealand will also trigger a tax rebate of around $114 million and has been flagged as a “significant financial risk” by the country’s treasury.

There’s no cap on how much the company is actually allowed to spend. This means that New Zealand could be on the hook for hundreds of millions of dollars to help subsidize the project.

The “Lord of the Rings” series is currently in production and expected to debut in late 2021.
