This Auto Maker Was America’s Top Selling Car Company in 2021
In an epic move, car maker Toyota dethroned GM in 2021 as the top selling automaker in America.
This is the first time since 1931 that the Detroit automaker has not been dubbed the best selling car company in the USA.
Reasons for why Toyota may have been able to push GM out of the throne could be because the company was able to manange supply chain issues better than GM, including an ongoing shortage of
semiconductor chips.
The continued shortage of semiconductor chips has caused sporadic shutdowns of plants and led to record-low vehicle inventories in 2021.
On Tuesday GM revealed that it had sold 2.2 million vehicles last year in the U.S. this was down 12.9% compared to 2020 figures.
Toyota revealed that it had sold 2.3 million vehicles in th ecountry, a growth of 10.4% compared to 2020.
With a difference of 114,034 vehicles, Toyota was able to nab the #1 spot.
Jack Hollis, Toyota North America’s senior vice president of automotive operations, downplayed the company’s No. 1 ranking and said, “Yes, we did surpass General Motors in sales. But to be clear, that is not our goal, nor do we see it as sustainable.”
Data from Automotive News has said that GM had been the largest seller of vehicles since 1931 in the U.S. The year it had surpassed Ford Motor.
GM’s stock achieved a new 52-week high this week of $65.98 a share despite the news.
Shares were boosted after Wall Street learned that the company said the chip shortage was easing and it increased production at the end of the year.
GM also said its fourth-quarter production and wholesale deliveries were up significantly from the third quarter as supplies increased.
Dealer inventory, including in-transit vehicles on their way to dealers, was 199,662 at the end of the fourth quarter, up from 128,757 cars and trucks at the end of the third quarter.
