Google Employees to Work From Home Until Summer of 2021
While many people are itching to get out of the house and back to their jobs in the world, many are also hoping to stay at home as long as they can during the coronavirus out break.
One company has decided that their employees will be staying at home for another year.
Tech giant Google has announced that it has extended its coronavirus work-from-home order to summer of 2021.
“To give employees the ability to plan ahead, we are extending our global voluntary work from home option through June 30, 2021 for roles that don’t need to be in the office,” Google CEO Sundar Pichai said in an e-mail to employees.
The company had originally said employees should expect to return to the office in January 2021.
The change will affect “nearly all” of Google’s 200,000 employees, including contractors and full-time workers, according to The Wall Street Journal who broke the news.
Google’s decision could prompt other businesses to soon follow suit. Amazon and Microsoft already have similar plans.
A Microsoft spokesperson said the firm’s workers will continue to work remotely until at least October. An Amazon official aid the company’s workers will be home until at least January 2021.
For Seattle this could be impactful on the city’s economy.
“That’s 325,000 people who work in downtown Seattle,” said Don Blakeney, vice president of advocacy and economic development for the Downtown Seattle Association. “That’s a big number to have working from home. ”
According to Blakeney, most workers spend $15 or $20 a day and add a great deal to the economic activity in the area.
