Get Ready for a Netflix Price Increase

Streaming giant Netflix announced that it is raising its subscriber prices ahead of its earnings call on Monday.

First reported by Reuters, the company’s basic plan in the U.S. rose by $1 to $9.99 per month. The standard U.S. subscription now costs $15.49 per month, up from $13.99. Netflix’s premium plan in the U.S was increased to $19.99 per month from $17.99.

The company will report Q4 earnings on January 20.

“We understand people have more entertainment choices than ever and we’re committed to delivering an even better experience for our members,” a spokesperson told Yahoo Finance.
Netflix’s third-quarter subscriber additions in 2021 rebounded from the prior three month.

During the company’s last earnings report, the company said it will switch to reporting hours viewed for its shows instead of the number of accounts watched.

Netflix’s website has said the following on the price changes, “These prices apply to new members and will gradually take effect for all current members. Current members will receive an email notification 30 days before their price changes, unless they change their plan.”

With the standard plan rising to $15.49 in the U.S., Netflix will now be more expensive than HBO for the first time in the company’s history.

Netflix shares are down 11% YTD.
