Facebook Pulls Down President’s Trump Campaign Census Ads
Leading social media network Facebook Inc. (FB) announced removal of all ads by President Trump’s re-election campaign that requested individuals to fill out an ‘Official 2020 Congressional District Census’ from its platform.
In a statement Facebook said these ads were going contrary to the company’s policies against misinformation on the government’s census.
The ads in question originated from Facebook pages of U.S Vice President Mike Pence whereby a link to an official survey is attached. In addition to the survey link there is also another link which requests for donations from users.
“We need Patriotic Americans like YOU to respond to this census, so we can develop a winning strategy for YOUR STATE,” reads part of the ad.
Civil rights activists claim they confronted and pushed Facebook to take down the ad Facebook promised to go through the ad once again thereafter they took it down.
Facebook has always been under consistent criticism for allowing politicians run misleading advertisements back in December the company retaliated by saying it will prohibit all ads which appears like they seek to limit involvement in upcoming U.S census slated for April 1.
“There are policies in place to prevent confusion around the official U.S. Census and this is an example of those being enforced,” said Facebook’s spokesperson Andy Stone.
Earlier in the day before Facebook took down the ads, U.S. House of Representatives Speaker Nancy Pelosi had faulted the company for the same ads while addressing a press conference.
“I know the profit motive is their business model. But it should not come at the cost of counting who is in our country, so that we can provide the services and the rest,” said Pelosi.
