Aldi is Planning to Open 70 New Stores by End of 2020

Aldi has become a favorite place to shop among many consumers and the store plans to open more locations by year end.

The discount retailer has said it aims to open over 70 new stores by the end of 2020 in an effort to attract new customers and wooing some away from grocery rivals, including Walmart and Kroger.

Aldi wants to become the third-largest U.S. grocery retailer with 2,500 stores by the end of 2022.

According to the company’s press release, the expansion plans will bring stores to the greater Phoenix area for the first time. It will add more stores to states including New York, Texas, Kansas and California.

The company will additionally open a new regional headquarters and distribution center in Loxley, Alabama in 2021 to support growth along the Gulf Coast in southern Alabama, Louisiana and the Florida

Panhandle.
Aldi currently has 2,000 stores across 36 states. Aldi US CEO Jason Hart has said that Aldi remains committed to offering value and has even lowered some prices as other grocers have raised them.

“This pandemic has reinforced how much consumers rely on us for their grocery needs, and we’re pleased to be able to support communities across the country with the lowest possible prices,” said Hart.

Earlier this month Aldi also announced that for the 10thconsecutive year, it has earned the title of Value Leader in the Market Force Information® Grocery Benchmark Study, which surveys thousands of U.S. shoppers about their grocery buying preferences.

In addition to earning the top spot for value in 2020, ALDI private label brands were named the most preferred among U.S. consumers.

“Ten years at the top is validation of our commitment to offering customers the lowest possible prices on their grocery needs, every single day —and that will never change,” said Hart.

“Customers have always counted on us for our low prices and we’re thrilled to also berecognized as the nation’s most preferred private label brand.”

ALDI has been No. 1 for pricefor three years running, according to the Dunnhumby Retailer Preference Index Report, Grocery Edition.

“The insights Market Force provides through our annual supermarket study serve as a meaningful performance measure in the marketplace,” said Ira Davies, Global SVP Sales & Marketing for Market Force.
