Samsung Unveils Second Foldable Smartphone

On Tuesday leading phone manufacturer Samsung Electronics (005930) unveiled its second model of a foldable smartphone at an event held in San Francisco, California.

The foldable smartphone going by the name ‘Galaxy Z flip’ assumes the shape of a makeup compact with a folding glass, the phone will be a 4G network enabled handset contrary to the 5G many were anticipated.

Samsung said the Galaxy Z flip will be available in three colors namely; black, gold and purple, the phone will be available for purchase starting this coming Friday and it will be retailing for $1,380.

Last year Samsung unveiled a similar phone dubbed ‘Galaxy Fold’ contrary to Galaxy flip, Galaxy Fold was larger in size had a plastic screen and it was folded like a book. In addition, fold was relatively higher priced since it went for $2,000.

Not to forget, Galaxy fold was the first 5G enabled phone produced by Samsung, further making it the first ever 5G handset in the world.

Samsung’s fiercest competitor Apple Inc. (AAPL) is yet to release a 5G enabled phone. The IPhone maker has also not released a foldable phone of any kind, however rumors has it that Apple is exploring plans for a foldable IPhone model which could be out in 2021.

On the other side Samsung’s competitor also Huawei Technologies released its first version of a foldable phone called ‘Mate X’ which is 5G enabled. Mate X goes for $2,400 however it faces some setbacks since it’s only available in China and it doesn’t have Google Apps.

At the San Francisco event Samsung also unveiled another model the ‘Galaxy S20’, an addition to its new S series. The S20 possesses many outstanding features among them, the handset is 5G enabled and it has four stunning cameras.
