Facebook’s CEO Mark Zuckerberg Meets President Trump
Social media giant Facebook said on Thursday that its CEO Mark Zuckerberg was in Washington D.C to meet with President Trump.
A spokesperson for the company told CNBC via email, “Mark is in Washington, D.C., meeting with policymakers to hear their concerns and talk about future internet regulation. He also had a good, constructive meeting with President Trump at the White House today.”
P
resident Trump also took to Twitter and his Facebook accounts to post a picture of himself and the CEO shaking hands. The president tweeted, “Nice meeting with Mark Zuckerberg of @Facebook in the Oval Office today.”
A spokesperson for Facebook said the meeting was a “good, constructive meeting.” There were no other details about what the meeting entailed.
Zuckerberg also met a number of lawmakers on Capitol Hill. A spokesman for Senator Mike Lee of Utah said that the two men discussed a “number of topics including bias against conservatives on Facebook’s platform, government regulation of digital platforms, antitrust enforcement, Section 230 liability and data-privacy issues.”
Senator Josh Hawley of Missouri told reporters that Zuckerberg had to sell the company’s messaging service WhatsApp and photo sharing app Instagram to prove it is serious about protecting data privacy.
“The company talks a lot. I’d like to see some action,” he said to the reporters. “I will believe Facebook when I see some real action out of Facebook.”
Zuckerberg also met with other senators during his time on Capital Hill, including Senator Mark Warner of Virginia, vice chairman of the Senate Intelligence Committee, Lee, a senior member of the Judiciary Committee, and Senators John Cornyn of Texas and Tom Cotton of Arkansas.
It was also on Thursday that the Menlo Park Police Department said it responded to an apparent suicide at Facebook’s headquarters. Police said a man jumped from the fourth floor of a building on Facebook’s campus.
“Menlo Park Police Officers and Menlo Park Fire Protection District personnel responded, and when they arrived, found the victim unresponsive,” Menlo Park Police Department stated. “Firefighters and paramedics administered medical aid but were unable to revive the victim.”
“We were saddened to learn that one of our employees passed away at our Menlo Park headquarters earlier today,” a Facebook spokeswoman stated. “We’re cooperating with police in their investigation and providing support to employees. While the family is being notified, we have no information to share. We hope to provide an update when we learn additional information from law enforcement.”
